The Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership to the volunteer services department, and providing a social environment with numerous daily interactions.


  • Serve as partner liaison to the Resident Volunteer Committee
  • Attend Independent Living Resident Council meeting and Committee meetings as requested and make reports
  • Identify community outreach opportunities to promote the volunteer program and to recruit volunteers (such as volunteer fairs, church gatherings)
  • Recruit, interview, orient, train, place, and evaluate volunteers
  • Maintain Volunteer Services procedure manual
  • Coordinate special events related to volunteers such as recognitions
  • Complete required reports and update work plans and the Balanced Score Card as required  
  • Serve as Volunteer Coordinator for the Otterbein Shuttle
    • Hold regular Shuttle Driver meetings
    • Recruit and orient new Shuttle drivers
    • Coordinate monthly Shuttle driver schedule
    • Maintain statistics in the required programs and develop required reports
    • Work with residents, families and volunteer for the effectiveness of the program 
  • Provide oversight and support to Shaker Cellar and the Thrift Store
    • Assist with processes and procedures
    • Work with chairpersons to mediate volunteer situations, when required
    • Assure appropriate management of operations 
  • Identify volunteer opportunities on campus and within the greater community
    • Survey staff at least annually to determine needs
    • Maintain accurate records and provide required reports on volunteer service
    • Coordinate and host Volunteer Fair on campus
    • Connect with community organizations to identify opportunities for residents to experience involvement in the surrounding community
  • Champion relevant communications related to volunteers,
    • Present on the OLN
    • Write Volunteer Corner in the Echoes
    • Create Volunteer Handbook, application, and volunteer job descriptions
    • Update volunteer brochure
    • Present at New Partner Orientation and Annual Education Day
  • Other duties as assigned


Education: Associates degree, two years, or equivalent experience.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Licensure/Certification: None

ExperienceMust be able to interact and communicate effectively with the older population and have 1 to 3 years’ experience working with this population.  Must have 1-2 years’ experience effectively managing a Volunteer Program.  Must be computer literate with ability to work in multiple and complex software programs.  Must be self-directed and an independent worker who does not require daily direct supervision.  Must be strong in time management and setting work priorities.  Must be experienced in managing programs.  Must be experienced in communicating to groups of people and individuals and motivating them.  Must be able to create statistical reports and write effective documents and plans.  Must be able to work and communicate effectively with a professionally diverse partner team.  Must be able to work with all levels of background and education as well as persons with cognitive and physical limitations.  Must be able to make independent decisions based on the best available information when the situation demands.  Excellent verbal and written communication required.  Must be an effective team member and support other departments.  Must engage in the Otterbein Experience culture and exhibit the 21 expected behaviors.
